A Promise For Protection. 04/14/2014 (Morning thought)

Psalms 91:1 He that dwelleth in the secret place of the most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty. 2 I will say of the Lord, He is my refuge and my fortress: my God; in him will I trust.

This passage of scripture tells us that God who is our refuge and strength in this world of turmoil and trouble, is well able to cover His people in times of danger, whether seen or unseen. It's not the will of God that as his children, we get all consumed and riled up about security and protecting ourselves, for although we should take the necessary, reasonable steps in this direction, yet we should never forget that it is God who ultimately shields us from harm and danger. This is what David alluded to when his life was being threatened daily by king Saul. Let's read:

Psalms 56:1 Be merciful unto me, O God: for man would swallow me up; he fighting daily oppresseth me. 2 Mine enemies would daily swallow me up: for they be many that fight against me, O thou most High. 3 What time I am afraid, I will trust in thee. 4 In God I will praise his word, in God I have put my trust; I will not fear what flesh can do unto me.

This particular passage of scripture came to life in my own experience when I was much younger. One night while I was asleep, an intruder forcibly entered my apartment and demanded a certain thing from me, which I was in no position to deliver. Angered at my response, he then pointed his loaded gun at me while I was still in bed and threatened to offload the entire magazine at me. Then for some unknown reason, the intruder turned and left without firing a single shot, much to my surprise. This incident took place about thirty three years ago, and to this day it remains a very vivid experience in my mind, for were it not for the promises of God's protecting care, I would not be sitting here, writing this article today.

The same God who protected me in times of grave peril, the same Jesus who sends His angels to watch our every step lest we fall, will cover you in the day of peril. We are living in a world that is fraught with tumults and violence of all sorts everyday, and now more than ever, we need to trust in the Mighty God of Jacob who has promised to be with us throughout life's journey. We therefore end with a passage of scripture that should encourage us not to look to man-made systems of protection merely, but would rather help us to focus our attention on God who is able to deliver us from all our foes. Let's read:

Deuteronomy 33:26 There is none like unto the God of Jeshurun, who rideth upon the heaven in thy help, and in his excellency on the sky. 27 The eternal God is thy refuge, and underneath are the everlasting arms: and he shall thrust out the enemy from before thee; and shall say, Destroy them.

May we learn the all-important lesson of trusting in God always. God bless!
