Hebrews 10:35 Cast not away therefore your confidence, which hath great recompence of reward. 36 For ye have need of patience, that, after ye have done the will of God, ye might receive the promise. 38 Now the just shall live by faith: but if any man draw back, my soul shall have no pleasure in him.
This passage of scripture teaches us the necessity of walking by faith, and not by sight, for the only way we can relate to God on any level, is by exercising faith in Him. One of the reasons for this foregone conclusion is because God is not bound by any natural law as we know it, for He is the great Law-giver, and is not subject to law as are created beings. God has set certain laws in motion, such as gravity and bouyancy, and these laws are daily engaged in the running and maintenance of our planet. But we should always remember that God is able to reverse or suspend them at any given moment, for all His laws are subject to His will. Thus, with the eye of faith focused on Christ, we behold possibilities that are not apparent to the skeptic, and that window of possibility is always to remain open for God to do the impossible. Let's read:
Luke 1:30 And the angel said unto her, Fear not, Mary: for thou hast found favour with God. 31 And, behold, thou shalt conceive in thy womb, and bring forth a son, and shalt call his name Jesus. 32 He shall be great, and shall be called the Son of the Highest".... 35 And the angel answered and said unto her, The Holy Ghost shall come upon thee, and the power of the Highest shall overshadow thee: therefore also that holy thing which shall be born of thee shall be called the Son of God. 37 For with God nothing shall be impossible.
The fact that God can override natural law at His pleasure is what baffles many scientists and even some Christians, and thus causes some to stumble in their search for God. That window of possibility, by which God is capable of doing that which defies all known science and laws, must always be left wide open, for sacred history teaches us that on many occasions He has intervened in the human experience in very unconventional ways. On such experience took place with Balaam and his donkey, when he insisted on going against what God had plainly stated.
As the prophet went on his wayward mission, in defiance of what God had revealed to him, the ass he was riding began to speak and to reason with him, something that had never taken place in history. What is worthy of consideration here is that dumb animals such as the donkey operate strictly on instinct, but on this singular occasion Balaam's animal was lifted out of the realm of instinct, and gifted with intelligence for a period of time, after which he was returned to the realm of instinct by the power of God. Thus God revealed through this experience that He is able to reverse and suspend natural law at His pleasure, hence the reason why we must walk by faith and not by sight. Let's read:
Numbers 22:27 And when the ass saw the angel of the Lord, she fell down under Balaam: and Balaam's anger was kindled, and he smote the ass with a staff. 28 And the Lord opened the mouth of the ass, and she said unto Balaam, What have I done unto thee, that thou hast smitten me these three times? 29 And Balaam said unto the ass, Because thou hast mocked me: I would there were a sword in mine hand, for now would I kill thee. 30 And the ass said unto Balaam, Am not I thine ass, upon which thou hast ridden ever since I was thine unto this day? was I ever wont to do so unto thee? and he said, Nay.
Here we have an intelligent conversation taking place between a man and his donkey, in which the animal, which is supposed to be limited to the realm of instinct, now reasons sensibly from cause to effect, and begs Balaam to remember how it had served him faithfully in years gone by. Now, it takes faith for us to understand that God can do these things, and since He does, then He can also do the impossible for you and me.
Let us therefore always remember to leave that window of possibility wide open for God to do whatsoever He sees fit to do, for if we cherish this understanding of the Eternal God, we make it possible for Him to reveal Himself to us in ways and means that defy all logic. The possibility of the dead being resurrected did not occur to Abraham before he walked in obedience to the word of God and offered his son Isaac. Similarly, there are possibilities out there, of which we know absolutely nothing, unless like the faithful of all ages, we too walk by faith and believe in the Living God.
We therefore end with a passage of scripture which establishes the basis for any meaningful relationship with God, and it is His will that we now cultivate a ready, believing mind, for with God, nothing shall be impossible. Let's read:
Hebrews 11:1 Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen. 6 But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him.
May The Lord add His blessing to the study and practice of His every word. God bless!
