Psalm 91:1 He that dwelleth in the secret place of the most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty. 2 I will say of the Lord, He is my refuge and my fortress: my God; in him will I trust. 4 He shall cover thee with his feathers, and under his wings shalt thou trust: his truth shall be thy shield and buckler.
This passage of scripture teaches us of the peace, contentment, and security which comes as a result of dwelling in the secret place of The Most High God, a place where it is necessary for all Christians to be found, especially in these evil days in which we now live. Another scripture tells us that God is our Refuge and strength, a very present help in times of trouble, and when taken and applied together, the two passages give us the assurance, that if we abide in Christ daily, all of our varied needs will be supplied in due season, so that the excessive worry and care about temporal concerns, which often afflict unbelievers, will not mar nor characterize our relationship with God.
Christ Himself exemplified in His own Person, what it means to dwell in the secret place of The Most High, for He was often found apart by Himself in a lonely, mountainous region, praying and interceding with God The Father, not only for guidance and direction for the coming day, but also for wisdom to meet the fallen sons of men in their various walks of life, and to minister to their spiritual and temporal needs in meaningful ways that would build up His kingdom on the earth. Let's read:
Mark 1:35 And in the morning, rising up a great while before day, he went out, and departed into a solitary place, and there prayed.
Mark 6:45 And straightway he constrained his disciples to get into the ship, and to go to the other side before unto Bethsaida, while he sent away the people. 46 And when he had sent them away, he departed into a mountain to pray. 47 And when even was come, the ship was in the midst of the sea, and he alone on the land.
With this intimate relationship with The Father, anything that was thrown across Christ's path by the adversary of souls, was signally rebuffed and routed, for in his unwearied efforts to overthrow our Redeemer, he actually ended up losing many of his own captives in the process, which forced him on several occasions to retreat and rethink his strategies. On one such occasion, the pharisees had sent out a deputy of officers to entrap Christ in His words, and to bring him bound to them for to try and convict Him, but when the officers arrived on the scene, they found Jesus in the middle of a sermon, which so stirred their hearts, that instead of arresting Him as they intended to do, they hung entranced upon His words, and forgot about their original mission in the process.
In addition to this, when they returned empty-handed, the pharisees discovered that one of their very own, was already inclined to believe on Jesus, having had a private meeting with Him unbeknownst to them, and this exasperated them so much that there were forced to scrap their plans, lest they should bleed more and more of their own number to the cause of Christ. It all has to do with dwelling in the secret place of The most High. Let's read:
John 7:32 The Pharisees heard that the people murmured such things concerning him; and the Pharisees and the chief priests sent officers to take him. 44 And some of them would have taken him; but no man laid hands on him. 45 Then came the officers to the chief priests and Pharisees; and they said unto them, Why have ye not brought him? 46 The officers answered, Never man spake like this man. 47 Then answered them the Pharisees, Are ye also deceived? 48 Have any of the rulers or of the Pharisees believed on him? 50 Nicodemus saith unto them, (he that came to Jesus by night, being one of them,) 51 Doth our law judge any man, before it hear him, and know what he doeth? 53 And every man went unto his own house.
It is often the case that satan is permitted to muddy our waters and cause us great heartache, and at such times we become bewildered, with no answers to his forays into our experiences. At other times we are found to be worrying ourselves silly about what he may or may not do, and then, instead of heading into the secret place of The Most High, as Christ often did, to find the wisdom and methods of overthrowing his schemes, we sit and wallow in the mud of our disappointment, worry, and anxiety, to the point where we sometimes begin to doubt the goodness and providence of God.
Let us therefore seek to emulate the example of Christ, by running to our Refuge in good times and bad, for God is The only One who has answers and solutions to every machination of the enemy of all righteousness, and Christ is The Only One who can turn seeming defeats into signal victories. We therefore end with a passage of scripture which encourages us to take Refuge in the secret place of The Most High, for it's only there where we may find peace and safety from life's most perplexing problems. Let's read:
Proverbs 18:10 The name of the Lord is a strong tower: the righteous runneth into it, and is safe.
May God add His blessing to the study and practice of His word. "Good night" and God bless!
