Exodus 20:8 Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy. 9 Six days shalt thou labour, and do all thy work: 10 But the seventh day is the sabbath of the Lord thy God: in it thou shalt not do any work, thou, nor thy son, nor thy daughter, thy manservant, nor thy maidservant, nor thy cattle, nor thy stranger that is within thy gates: 11 For in six days the Lord made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested the seventh day: wherefore the Lord blessed the sabbath day, and hallowed it.
This passage of scripture is the fourth commandment of the Decalogue, and it's the only one which starts with the word remember, just as if God in His foreknowledge saw that most of earth's inhabitants will forget the one and only Sabbath day. In most places where this law is reiterated in the scriptures, the mention of God's creative work is also present, for as stated in the fourth commandment, it is a memorial of His creation. However, God's power to create is not restricted to material things and animate beings, but is also exercised in the creating of a new heart and mind in the lives of those who have accepted Christ as Lord and Savior. This sacred truth is what David alluded to when, in desperation he threw himself into the arms of a Merciful God, after his horrible transgression in the matter pertaining to Uriah and his wife Bathsheba. Let's read:
Psalm 51:10 Create in me a clean heart, O God; and renew a right spirit within me. 11 Cast me not away from thy presence; and take not thy holy spirit from me. 12 Restore unto me the joy of thy salvation; and uphold me with thy free spirit.
God also signaled to His people throughout the ages that the proper observance of the Sabbath would also be a sign of His re-creative work of sanctification, as He seeks to restore the image of God in man, a process that can only be accomplished through His supernatural and omnipotent power working in us. Thus the Sabbath, as observed since the time that Adam and Eve fell, is also a memorial of God's power to recreate, and therefore is all the more important for those who desire to be heirs of His salvation. Let's read:
Exodus 31:13 ... "Verily my sabbaths ye shall keep: for it is a sign between me and you throughout your generations; that ye may know that I am the Lord that doth sanctify you.
If the Sabbath were to be kept as God ordained, very great and positive changes for the better would immediately go into effect throughout the entire human family, from the way we do business, to our national security, and also to our curriculum in schools and universities. The proper observance of the Sabbath would immediately eradicate the false theory of evolution now being taught, and with evolution out the window, the way would be prepared for very rare discoveries in science, and great inventions of no ordinary character to take place, for God would then open up our understanding about the universe, and give to us knowledge and wisdom about the way things work that would make our current inventions, which we so often gloat about, look like inferior science. This is what He did with Solomon, when he was walking in obedience to all of God's commandments. Let's read:
1st Kings 4:29 And God gave Solomon wisdom and understanding exceeding much, and largeness of heart, even as the sand that is on the sea shore. 30 And Solomon's wisdom excelled the wisdom of all the children of the east country, and all the wisdom of Egypt. 31 For he was wiser than all men" .... "and his fame was in all nations round about. 33 And he spake of trees, from the cedar tree that is in Lebanon even unto the hyssop that springeth out of the wall: he spake also of beasts, and of fowl, and of creeping things, and of fishes. 34 And there came of all people to hear the wisdom of Solomon, from all kings of the earth, which had heard of his wisdom.
The world as it stands today has lost much on account of the constant violation of the memorial of God's creative work, and He is now calling on all sincere Christians to "Remember" the Sabbath day to keep it holy. And to those who are willing to go against the grain of current contemporary teachings to the contrary, and who are willing to follow in Christ's footsteps in the keeping of the Sabbath, great promises of success and excellence in temporal and spiritual lines are given, for the Sabbath was also designed for our own good, just as is the case with every other law and instruction we've been given by God. We therefore end with a promise to the faithful who choose to serve The Living God by honoring Him on His holy day, because obedience to every command God has given, always results in manifold blessings to those who walk by faith, trusting in Him. Let's read:
Isaiah 58:13 If thou turn away thy foot from the sabbath, from doing thy pleasure on my holy day; and call the sabbath a delight, the holy of the Lord, honourable; and shalt honour him, not doing thine own ways, nor finding thine own pleasure, nor speaking thine own words: 14 Then shalt thou delight thyself in the Lord; and I will cause thee to ride upon the high places of the earth, and feed thee with the heritage of Jacob thy father: for the mouth of the Lord hath spoken it.
May The Lord add His blessing to the study and practice of His every word. God bless!
