The Incarnation Of Christ. 01/25/2015 (Evening thought)

John 1:14  And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.  15 John bare witness of him, and cried, saying, This was he of whom I spake, He that cometh after me is preferred before me: for he was before me.  16 And of his fulness have all we received, and grace for grace.

This passage of scripture teaches us that Christ took upon Himself our own flesh and blood in order that He might save us from our sins and certain death. This central truth of the gospel does not receive the consideration it is due, for what was accomplished by Christ's life and death as a man, has implications that are far reaching, even to eternity. After Adam sinned in the garden of Eden, the human race was plunged into an abyss of sin and rebellion that it was impossible for us to free ourselves from, and even though many righteous men had lived upon the earth, not a single one of them, from Enoch to Noah had been untouched by the stains of sin, for every one of Adam's descendants were born in sin and shapen in iniquity, a fact that is referred to in several passages of scripture. Let's read:

Romans 3:9  What then? are we better than they? No, in no wise: for we have before proved both Jews and Gentiles, that they are all under sin;  10 As it is written, There is none righteous, no, not one:  11 There is none that understandeth, there is none that seeketh after God.  12 They are all gone out of the way, they are together become unprofitable; there is none that doeth good, no, not one.

Therefore the deadly cycle of sin and death could only be broken if God intervened on a personal level, to live the life that we should live and to die the death that was our due, and in order to accomplish this, the Bible tells us that God sent His Son into the world, not to condemn us, but that we could be saved through Him. It's important then for us to understand from the scriptures what Christ's incarnation has done on our behalf. Jesus took on our flesh and blood, just like every other human being, so that He could identify with our weaknesses and infirmities in real time, and by so doing was able to conquer sin in the flesh. Christ never once sinned, but because He took on the liabilities of fallen humanity, He could be tempted just as we are, with the natural cravings of the flesh, such as hunger, thirst, tiredness, et cetera. Let's read:

Hebrews 2:14  Forasmuch then as the children are partakers of flesh and blood, he also himself likewise took part of the same; that through death he might destroy him that had the power of death, that is, the devil;  15 And deliver them who through fear of death were all their lifetime subject to bondage.  17 Wherefore in all things it behoved him to be made like unto his brethren, that he might be a merciful and faithful high priest in things pertaining to God, to make reconciliation for the sins of the people.  18 For in that he himself hath suffered being tempted, he is able to succour them that are tempted.

Hebrews 4:15  For we have not an high priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities; but was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin.  16 Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need.

It is because Christ conquered sin in the flesh why we also can be conquerors in our own battles with sin and self, and because God Has promised and given us supernatural power through The Holy Ghost, therefore we are without excuse if we are found to be slaves of sin in any form or fashion. We are to overcome just as Christ overcame, not by depending on our own might and power which avails nothing, but by linking up with Divine power, through which we can do all things through Christ who strengthens us. The incarnation of Christ has brought the prospect of real victory to life, in everyone who accepts Him as Lord and Savior, therefore we are not to wallow in the mire of inherited or cultivated sin, as if we are still bound in iron chains, and destined to fail in our efforts to overcome.

Every bad trait of character, and every flaw or besetting sin can be successfully routed through the power and grace of Christ, and therefore we should zip up our boots and gird on the complete armor of God that serious war may be waged against those stubborn sins which strive for the mastery. We therefore end with a passage of scripture that shows us our real potential in being victorious through Christ, and it is our privilege and duty to think and live as overcomers, for God is able to make the weakest saint strong, if we keep our gaze and focus on Christ who gives us the victory. Let's read:

2nd Peter 1:3  According as his divine power hath given unto us all things that pertain unto life and godliness, through the knowledge of him that hath called us to glory and virtue:  4 Whereby are given unto us exceeding great and precious promises: that by these ye might be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust.  5 And beside this, giving all diligence, add to your faith virtue; and to virtue knowledge; 6 And to knowledge temperance; and to temperance patience; and to patience godliness; 7 And to godliness brotherly kindness; and to brotherly kindness charity.  8 For if these things be in you, and abound, they make you that ye shall neither be barren nor unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.

May The Lord add His blessing to the study and practice of His word. "Good night" and God bless!
