The Tower Of Babel. 08/29/2014 (Evening thought)

Genesis 11:5 And the Lord came down to see the city and the tower, which the children of men builded. 6 And the Lord said, Behold, the people is one, and they have all one language; and this they begin to do: and now nothing will be restrained from them, which they have imagined to do. 7 Go to, let us go down, and there confound their language, that they may not understand one another's speech. 8 So the Lord scattered them abroad from thence upon the face of all the earth: and they left off to build the city.

The history of the tower of Babel, as portrayed in the above passage, speaks to us of the deliberate efforts made by men after the flood, to eliminate God from their thoughts, and also to live independently of Him, and the instructions He has given to the human family. The Lord knew that because of the utter devastation caused by the flood, that men would then become terribly afraid, any time dark clouds gathered on the horizon, or rain started falling, and so He gave us a promise that the earth as a whole would not be destroyed by a flood. This promise was intended to bring assurance of life on a continual basis on the earth, and was designed to inspire trust in God. Let's read:

Genesis 9:8 And God spake unto Noah, and to his sons with him, saying, 9 And I, behold, I establish my covenant with you, and with your seed after you; 12 And God said, This is the token of the covenant which I make between me and you and every living creature that is with you, for perpetual generations: 13 I do set my bow in the cloud, and it shall be for a token of a covenant between me and the earth. 16 And the bow shall be in the cloud; and I will look upon it, that I may remember the everlasting covenant between God and every living creature of all flesh that is upon the earth.

But instead of believing God, the human family decided to build a tower of such great height as to make them safe in the event of another deluge, and so, instead of multiplying and populating the entire earth as God had ordained, they decided to build a city as a fortress, so that they could be united in rebellion against The Creator. At this time here spoken of their communication system was centralized, for the entire earth spoke one universal language, hence the reason why they were able to collaborate in building. Let's read:

Genesis 11:1 And the whole earth was of one language, and of one speech. 4 And they said, Go to, let us build us a city and a tower, whose top may reach unto heaven; and let us make us a name, lest we be scattered abroad upon the face of the whole earth.

In order to stop this rebellion from continuing to a finish, God decided to arrest the situation by confusing their mode of communication, and so He there confounded their language so that they could not understand one another, and were then forced to disperse across the entire earth, and that's one of the reasons why today we have very many languages upon the face of the earth.

In our day we are again searching for one universal language via the internet, or the "World Wide Web", from which we get w.w.w, and we have again reached into the "Clouds" with our communication systems, and so, because of the rapid increase of knowledge and the many devices we are now able to build almost daily, we are becoming more and more averse to our Creator, so that He is now considered by many to be more irrelevant in our day, than when the antediluvians were confounded in their speech. But the same God, who in Noah's day touched their communication system can also touch ours, and He gives us warning so that the mistakes of the past would not be repeated us in our day. Let's read:

Luke 17:26 And as it was in the days of Noe, so shall it be also in the days of the Son of man.

When we become so independent that God is put out of our thoughts, and when we become so self-centered that we regard the Bible as being irrelevant, then we may be certain that the prophecies pointing to the soon return of Christ will be fulfilled in due season, and we are now hastening towards that day, as can be clearly seen by the numerous tumults, wars, and other disturbances that are arising daily across the globe, and right here in our own backyard. The deadly violence in the middle east, the escalation of turmoil in Ukraine, and the various riots, kidnappings, and blood-letting that are occurring daily are not just passing incidents and circumstances that can be attributed to mere chance or misfortune.

These occurrences portend the soon coming of Christ, and thus it behooves us to live in readiness, and help to get others ready, so that we may be prepared for the winds of strife that have already begun to blow across the earth. We therefore end with a passage of scripture that should remove our focus from the temporal to the eternal, for the time is at hand. Let's read:

Daniel 12:1  And at that time shall Michael stand up, the great prince which standeth for the children of thy people: and there shall be a time of trouble, such as never was since there was a nation even to that same time: and at that time thy people shall be delivered, every one that shall be found written in the book.

Let us therefore be sober and vigilant, knowing that our redemption draws near. "Good night" and God bless!
